Northern Arizona is a beautiful and fun place to explore
If you haven’t explored Flagstaff, Arizona and the areas around it, it’s a must. The beauty of the land alone is breathtaking and it’s an easy drive from Phoenix (about two hours).
Gretchen and her family have a home in Flagstaff and have enjoyed exploring the area and all it has to offer! The town has history, charm and offers so much to do in terms of hiking and day trips. Here is Gretchen’s round up of all things Flag and the surrounding areas.
Where to Stay
Great location right off the Freeway. Recently re-done and the restaurant and bar are quite good.
The newest hot spot to stay in Flag. It's a renovated motel with modern mountain vibe. Plus the community spaces are super cool.
Great location if you want to walk anywhere downtown.
Where to Eat
A great breakfast and lunch spot - possibly the best food in Flag. You must try the omelette!
A must for Apres Ski, but open year-round and a great bar spot.
Family-friendly restaurant located on the Continental golf course. Has a great outside area with activities for kids.
Not open in winter.
All their burgers are on English muffins. Delish!
We don't go to Flagstaff without eating here. Two locations.
A great spot for local beer.
One of Gretchen's favorite juice spots in Az. Perfect in and out for a healthy lunch, acai bow or juice.
Great dinner spot in downtown Flag.
Really, really good breakfast. Go hungry, the portions are huge.
A Flag institution with the most extensive coffee menu. Try the Café Mexicano. Vegan options available.
A great family-friendly dinner spot with arcade games for kids. The menu has options for everyone.
Local dive bar. Go if you want some local character. Arriving via ATV is not uncommon.
Think butcher with an area to sit down and eat. Stop in and grab meat to go and grill, or order a sandwich dine in. Don’t miss this spot - these are some of the best quality sandwiches and food we've ever had. Parking can be tricky.
Renowned breakfast joint with a Mexican flare. Try the Chilequiles.
Unexpected in a mountain town but great Thai for dinner.
Fun spot to grab a drink before or after dinner. Check out the upstairs wine bar.
Another great local beer spot.
Another awesome breakfast spot new NAU. Offers a fun, large patio!
Fun dinner spot for the foodies out there.
The nicest restaurant in Flag for dinner showcasing farm fresh foods from northern AZ. The chef is highly acclaimed. Leave the kids at home!
A local western style dive bar with a dance floor and music. Wear your wranglers and boots and head after dinner for a fun time. Also hosts events!
To Do
The perfect NYE activity if traveling with your kids.
Whether you are altitude sensitive, recovering from an extreme outdoorsy trek, or just need hydration, stop by our favorite IV bar to replenish yourself and feel amazing.
Walnut Canyon National Monument
A must for kids. See native Arizona wildlife (bears, skunks, hawks, etc.) inside a park-like setting.
Big hit with the kids! Bring a flashlight or headlamp and close toed shoes.
Upper Lake Mary & General Store
A pretty outdoor recreation area with a walking path around the lake. Visit the store for refreshment or snack.
Flagstaff Community Farmers First Fridays Art Walk Downtown
Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course
A tree-to-tree obstacle course with zip lines and many other fun challenges. A great stop for older kiddos. Check height and age requirements.
Hikes
Day Trips from Flagstaff
One of the best hikes to do with kids due to the water that you walk through on the hike. Wear a Teva or water shoe to handle the hiking/climbing at the end!
A beautiful and unique canyon two hours from Flagstaff near Page, AZ. Highly recommend a stop and tour here if it makes sense with your travels.
Take a day trip to Winslow, Arizona (yes, from the Eagle's song) and kayak in Clear Creek Reservoir. Rental companies provide kayaks and paddle boards. About an hour drive from Flag.
Only 1.5 hours from Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon is a must see!
