Coronado Island Travel Guide
Everything you need to know about this gem of a place across the bridge from San Diego, California
Allison and her family love their time on Coronado Island. It’s a summer tradition they look forward to each year and a welcomed escape from the Arizona heat. The drive from Arizona isn’t bad at all (under 6 hours) and if you fly, Coronado is a short and easy drive (approx. 15 minutes) from the San Diego airport and over the Coronado Bridge.
The world famous Hotel Del Coronado is the most iconic spot on the island. It was built in 1888 and it’s history includes hosting celebrities, US Presidents and royalty. It is a beautiful place to gather and enjoy during your stay. Whether you’re just walking through, grabbing a coffee or cocktail or enjoying a meal…a stop at The Del is a must. This is where the US Navy Seals train and home to several military bases. You might catch a sighting of the Seals training on the beach and in the water. It’s quite inspiring.
Where to stay:
Hotel Del Coronado - There are many options when booking. Be sure and check out their website and map of the property. There are charming original rooms, newer towers and villas. The rooms under the Sun Deck are particularly special as they open up to the boardwalk and beach.
The El Cordova - Across from The Del, this spot is more funky but well located for dining and walking to the beach.
Glorietta Bay Inn - Across from The Del and closer to the bay.
The Shores - These are the white towers just south of The Del. There are ten, 15-story residential units built in the 60s-70s. Allison and her family love staying here. They have excellent beach access, several pools, tennis courts and a beach club for the community. Some units are dog friendly and Chico is able to join their family most summers.
Rental Home - Many secure a home on the island through VBRO, Airbnb or privately.
Where to eat:
The Henry - Morning coffee/brunch/lunch/hh/dinner. Make a reservation or be prepared to wait during peak times. There are plenty of shops around to peruse while waiting.
Clayton’s - Old school diner (there will be a wait if you get there later in the morning during the summertime). Their side window is a great spot for picking up coffee and donuts “to go”.
Jolie Coronado - Allison loves for lunch. Their menu is seasonal, local sourcing. Excellent.
Park Place Liquor and Deli - The sandwiches here are super tasty. It’s a great spot to pick up and take with you to the beach.
Clayton’s Bistro - French vibe and lovely breakfast or brunch. Their bakery is fantastic.
Little Frenchie’s - Fun for a date night or boozy lunch. Fantastic cheese plate and their version of a grilled cheese is delicious.
Garage Buona Forchetta - Fantastic spot. Family friendly and a great atmosphere. Make reservation for sure!
Miguel’s - Classic spot for Mexican food.
Nado Republic - Italian and fun vibe.
Sun Deck at The Del - Cocktails are a must here. The menu is smaller but you can’t go wrong with any of their offerings. The double cheeseburger is beyond if you feel indulgent but the salads and lighter items are delicious as well. You‘ll need an umbrella or shady spot during the day. Lovely for sunset.
Serea at The Del - A special dinner spot. Excellent, primo seafood.
The Bluewater Grill - Good seafood and fun boathouse atmosphere right on the bay. The bar upstairs is great for cocktails and oysters.
Swaddee Thai - Delicious Thai spot. Need a reservation unless you get lucky.
Lobster West - If you like a good lobster roll, this is your spot.
McP’s Irish Pub - Fish ’n Chips in the bar or on the patio with a cold beer are hard to beat.
High Tide Pizza - They deliver on the island but early-ish hours. Good pizza.
Parakeet Cafe - A super healthy and delicious spot. Wellness coffees, smoothies, protein bowls, salads and more. A wonderful place for breakfast, lunch and throughout the day.
Moo Town Creamery - The kids will want to go. There will be a line.

What to do:
There’s a lot to do!
Strolling down Orange is a must. Two of Allison’s favorite clothing boutiques are Avenu and Paris & Me She loves visiting a jewelry store called Lumo as well.
Outdoor activities including biking down The Silver Strand, kayaking or boating in the bay, beaching it and walking/running/biking around the island (about 6 miles total) allow you to enjoy the beautiful weather here.
S’mores in front of The Del is a very special treat (expensive) or you can have your own cookout on the beach.
Taking the ferry (15-20 min) across the bay to Downtown San Diego and exploring makes for wonderful day or evening.
For younger children or anyone who is interested, seeing The Midway is a wonderful outing and learning experience.
Allison and her family love to beach it and relax. She does a lot of walking, reading and recharging while she‘s there. The ocean currents are typically calm and swimmable, especially south of The Del. Coronado is a great beach for boogie boarding.
